I was wondering how much people know about eco-friendly and sustainable floristry ?

When you think about a wedding, funeral or event, do you ever wonder where your flowers have come from and what happens to them after your event ?

Many flowers are grown thousands of miles away, using pesticides and chemicals. They are flown-in and then get delivered on a lorry. They are then kept in fridges until collected or delivered.

The alternative to this, is to use seasonal, British flowers where they are locally-grown or grown by some amazing British growers in this country. They are fresh, you get the best flowers available on the day and they retain their scent.

I’ve been thinking about the perfect eco and sustainable event !

Your local grower/florist sows a seed or plants a bulb, adds peat-free, organic compost + a natural feed like seaweed and you get a beautiful flower. They don’t use pesticides or any other nasties on these flowers, so, the bees, butterflies and other pollinators love them for it J

Your florist takes the flower, conditions it and creates a stunning bouquet/arrangement for your wedding, funeral or event. Flowers love being in water ! If that’s not practical, your florist should use sustainably harvested British moss or biodegradable foam in their design.

They are then delivered/set-up at your event.

After your event, I would always encourage you to take your British flowers home to enjoy them more. Otherwise, they will probably just be thrown in the bin by the venue.

You can then, compost them in your home composter, put them in your green waste bin or preserve them forever in resin.

My friend, Sal, at www.salsforeverflowers.com creates some amazing keepsakes with flowers from weddings and funerals …from handbags and ring-holders to cake stands and coasters…a truly lovely way to keep your special flowers forever.

Every year, we hold British Flowers Week. This year it is 12th to 19th June 2022.

Look out for #britishflowersweek on Facebook and Instagram and some really amazing creations/suppliers.
